Saskatoon’s Student-Athletes Shine On and Off the Field

SASKATOON’s sports community has much to be proud of as the University of Saskatchewan celebrated another year of outstanding achievement at its year-end awards. Eight remarkable individuals took home major honors, while countless others were recognized for excelling in athletics, academics, and community leadership. These student-athletes embody dedication, perseverance, and the true spirit of Huskie pride.

Among the standout winners was Gage Grassick (Basketball), named Most Outstanding Female Athlete, and Roddy Ross (Hockey), earning Most Outstanding Male Athlete—both proving that hard work and talent go hand in hand. Meanwhile, rookies Gabrielle Flaman (Volleyball) and Trevor Wong (Hockey) claimed the Female and Male Rookie of the Year titles, signaling a bright future for Huskies athletics.

Beyond individual accolades, the awards highlighted well-rounded excellence. Kaitlyn Harrison (Cross Country/Track & Field) and Jake Neufeld (Track & Field) earned honors as the top all-around athletes, demonstrating versatility in competition and leadership. Coach Lisa Thomaidis (Basketball) was rightly named Coach of the Year, a testament to her ability to inspire and develop champions.

Equally deserving was Taevan Athmer (Men’s Volleyball), recognized as Student Trainer of the Year, showcasing the vital support behind the scenes.

These achievements are more than just trophies—they represent the relentless effort of young athletes balancing sport, studies, and service to the community. Saskatoon should take pride in these role models who exemplify excellence in every sense.
